Reasons Behind Mis/Understanding English Conversational Implicatures by University Learners in Yemen

English, as a communication tool, plays an extremely significant role in cross-cultural communication. While it is true that language users can mean exactly what they their utterances, also have utterances much more than say. Speakers of English speak indirectly, and using conversational implicatures way to be indirect. And sentences often express messages above beyond literal meanings, not surprising pragmatic errors are found learning process EFL learners' Therefore, this study aims at investigating the factors misunderstanding or understanding among Yemeni university learners. It follows empirical analytical-descriptive method consisting test interview. Randomly, 50% population was selected sample. They were 62 A multiple-choice discourse completion ( MCDCT ) semi structure interview used for collecting data. The contained eleven types implicature collected data analyzed quantitatively qualitatively. results reveal different caused misinterpretation However, differences socio-cultural knowledge indirectness instrumental contexts study. familiarity some formulaic pattern others pose no challenge subjects interpret implicatures. familiar easy grasp. provides recommendations expected enable learners develop competence regarding suggests reconsideration existing methodologies on teaching foreign language. Hence, would ease concern students about implicature, build up confidence enhance learning.
